LAW-8087 In-House Counsel Immersion
Success as in-house counsel requires specialized knowledge and skills paired with a deep understanding of organizational culture, risk appetite, and business objectives. This 2-credit experiential course builds the foundational knowledge and essential skills needed to thrive as counsel within corporations, universities, hospitals and non-profits. Students will be assigned to work within a fictional company throughout the semester, placing them in the role of in-house counsel. Students will be asked to respond to industry-specific challenges, address compliance issues, handle ethical dilemmas, engage in risk management, and develop corporate legal trainings. Throughout, students will learn to provide sound, industry-specific legal counsel that aligns with business goals.Students enrolled in this course who seek additional hands-on experience may but are not required to apply for a limited number of exclusive in-house counsel externship placements at local companies, secured by the Professor. Students selected for these placements can earn an additional 2-5 ungraded, experiential credits. Students interested in this additional opportunity should contact the Professor. This course will serve as the externship seminar for these placements, so students do not need to enroll in the other externship seminars.
