LAW-8045 First Amendment: Critical Perspectives
Welcome to The First Amendment! This course offers a critical examination of freedom of expression and freedom of religion under the U.S. Constitution. Topics for exploration will include historical and contemporary values underlying First Amendment jurisprudence; anti-war include historical and contemporary values underlying First Amendment jurisprudence; anti-war and anti-government speech; racist, antisemitic, Islamophobic, and other hateful speech; restrictions on speech in public schools and on university campuses; white Christian privilege and government support for religion; settler colonialism and the suppression of Indigenous religious freedom; and the racialization and subordination of religious minorities. Course materials will include judicial decisions along with scholarly commentaries drawn from Critical Race Theory and other critical literatures.
