CI-1125 Travel Photography

Using great American author Mark Twains quote from The Innocents Abroad OR, The New Pilgrims Progress, Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow- mindedness, and many of our people need it on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all ones lifetime., as a starting point and continuing guide in our own learning and understanding of the power of photography to make better understanding between citizens of the United States and other countries and cultures. No better evidence of this than the instructors own experience traveling and leading successful Suffolk University study abroad photography classes to Europe and Africa. In each case greater mutual understanding of the visiting photographers and host country had the impact of moving closer towards world peace. We will study past and present photographers and photographic processes and their evolution through time. Using creativity and innovative techniques in photography students will learn to create impactful and meaningful visuals that describe the travel and picture making experience. Since we are in Boston, a great travel destination, as in other photography classes we will use Bostons unique and mostly defined neighborhoods as visual and cultural zones for our cameras and lenses. The classes will further prepare the students with a basic and solid foundation in photography that they will use and adapt to as lifelong learners.
