CI-1121 How to Be a Friend
Friendship is an essential part of the human experience and comes in many forms: best, work and school friends, acquaintances, toxic friends, frenemies, short and long term. Yet, in a society built on competition, this important relationship can be shuffled aside and left unexamined as we get older. This course is designed to approach friendship as a vital experience and view it as a skill. We will examine the importance of our own agency within this type of relationship and will engage with friendship through important aspects of connection- conflict resolution, listening and assertion (advocacy) skills. We will be interested in questions like: Why are they needed? Why are they worth fighting for? How do we know when to end them? Can friendships change the world? Ultimately, this course asks us to look at ourselves, being in this relationship, and construct a creative way to interact with the problems of dealing with others in ways that enrich our lives
