LAW-2460 Inside Job: Exploring the Role of In-House Counsel

As Corporate America relies more and more on in-house counsel for the provision of legal services, in-house lawyers have taken on broader and more significant roles and face challenges that are very different from their counterparts in law firms and legal service organizations. Today, many in-house counsels for new businesses and start-ups must have a flexible approach to their positions and develop skills in many legal disciplines, as they face a host of challenges as the business grows. This course will provide students with an opportunity to gain a sense of the roles, responsibilities, and challenges of in-house counsel through discussions, lectures, guest attorneys, and simulations of situations based on actual legal matters being addressed in the current in-house legal environment. Topics covered will include the dual role of the in-house lawyer, hiring and managing outside counsel, employee relations matters, issues in intellectual property and privacy, and ethical issues facing in-house counsel. The course is relevant to students considering a career as in-house counsel as well as to students who will practice in law firms and other organizations, since those lawyers very often interface with in-house counsel as their primary company contacts. The course will be taught by Alexander (Alex) Gavis, who has over thirty years of legal experience as a corporate and business counsel in government and business enterprises. He most recently served as SVP & Deputy General Counsel at Fidelity Investments, handling and overseeing legal services for Fidelitys many diversified business lines. The grade for the course will be based on class participation and presentation, and a research paper on a topic of the students choice specifically related to the concepts and issues discussed in the class 28 Apr 2022 7:02 AM
