Academic Notice
Students who do not maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 are considered to be on Academic Notice. Students are notified in writing of their Academic Notice standing by the Academic Standing Committee within their respective Dean’s Office.
Students should consider the seriousness of the Academic Notice standing and utilize this period as an opportunity to take advantage of resources on campus to improve their academic performance. Students on Academic Notice must meet regularly with an academic coach in the Center for Learning and Academic Success. The Academic Standing Committee may set additional measures, supports, or goals that must be met within the next semester for continued enrollment at Suffolk. These measures, supports, or goals may include, but are not limited to, a reduced course load in the next semester or accessing additional academic support services.
Involvement on Campus: Students on Academic Notice may continue to participate in activities on campus with the following exceptions: students on Academic Notice may not participate in varsity athletics, hold an elected or appointed position in a student group, club, or organization, or represent the University in co-curricular and intercollegiate activities.
Financial Aid: Academic standing review is an academic process independent of federal guidelines related to student aid. Students who continue not to meet the minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average may be allowed to continue at the University academically but be denied financial aid eligibility. ALL students who have financial aid and find themselves in academic difficulty should meet with their financial aid advisor to understand their personal situation.
The Academic Standing Committee will review the student’s progress at the end of the following semester.
- If the student has met the minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average, the student will no longer be on Academic Notice.
- If the student continues not to meet the minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average, but is demonstrating academic improvement and meeting the goals outlined by the Academic Standing Committee, the student will remain on Academic Notice.
- If the student continues not to meet the minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average and is not demonstrating academic improvement, the student will be subject to dismissal. Please see the Academic Dismissal portion of the Academic Standing Policy for additional information.
Academic Notice/Removal from the Major:
Students who earn a grade point average below 2.0 in their major, even if only one course has been completed, are reminded of the minimum grade point average requirements and referred to their faculty advisor. Students who continue not to meet the 2.0 grade point average in their major courses may be placed on Academic Notice and may subsequently be removed from the major. Students must earn a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average in their major (and minor, if applicable) in order to earn the related degree.
