PHIL-263 Indigenous Philosophy
This course will examine the philosophical thought of indigenous peoples from three distinct regions: North America (e.g. Inuit, Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, Oceti Sakowin, etc.), Central and South America (Aztec and Mayan), and Polynesia (Maori and Hawaiian). In addition to examining classic texts associated with these peoples, students will also consider aspects of oral philosophical traditions with a view toward relating them to textual-based traditions. Some examples of contemporary decolonial thought will also be surveyed. 1 term - 4 credits. Normally offered alternate years.
