LAW-2284 Judicial Clerkship Seminar
This course is ideal for students who wish to hone their writing skills, as well as prepare or market themselves for a concurrent or future judicial internship, externship, or clerkship. This course is available to all students and is required for students enrolling in a judicial externship. The two credits granted for this course are experiential credits and are in addition to and independent of any externship credits awarded for the field placement experience. This experiential seminar will engage students in judicial writing practice and discussion of the unique ethical and legal responsibilities of working as an attorney in judicial organizations. This course will also provide education in bias, cultural competency, antiracism and professional identity formation. Externship experiences may also be discussed in class. Experienced guest speakers will provide insight into their experiences working for the judiciary and their prior or subsequent career paths. Readings, in-class exercises, and class participation are essential components of the course. Regular journal entries will be required. The course will not satisfy the writing requirement. The course will be graded on a H/P/LP/F basis. If a student in judicial externship placement is unable to take this course, or has taken it in the past, the student may request a waiver from the Director of Externship Programs and may be supervised individually. Students who have questions about the externship component of the course should contact the Director of Externship Programs, Mary Sawicki (msawiski@suffolk.edu).
