LAW-0082 Human Rights Project

LAW-0082 Human Rights Project: 2-3 credits (web) The Human Rights Project is a two (87 hours) or three-credit (130 hours) experiential law lab. Students chose their credit hours and then work on a project of their own design relating to human rights. The primary focus of the Project is on "bringing rights home," which includes creating domestic awareness of existing international human rights norms and exploring how those legal norms might be utilized at a local, state, or national level. Examples of projects done in the past include designing a "know your own rights" campaign, putting together  "teaching module" for high school students, developing an app on reproductive rights, establishing a human rights blog relating to the right to housing, or doing a specific human rights project with a local NGO in which you already have an established relationship. Students need to be self-motivated and ready to engage in independent work. You will complete two project papers and a final project. The class will meet on Zoom once a week for 90 minutes. Initially it will be on Thursday from, 8-9:30 p.m. but once the group has convened we can find another common time if that is not optimal for everyone. The remainder of your time will be spent on research and project development.

Relevant experience: Any of the following will assist you in the project-based aspect of this course - Human Rights Survey, International Law, International Environmental Law, European Court of Human Rights, Civil Rights based course, or expertise or experience in the field of human rights or a course addressing some aspect of human rights or civil rights.

If you have any questions regarding the course or would like examples of past projects, feel free to email Prof. Lorie Graham at lgraham@suffolk.edu. Similar to the clinics, the course will be capped at 6-8 students.
