HST-223 History of Law

Surveys the laws historical development, from the uncodified customs of the ancient world, to the first legal code of Hammurabi, to the European legal tradition: Roman law, Canon law, and the Anglo-Saxon common law. We will examine the laws historical development and its role in different historical moments. We will explore modern law and legal institutions; the relationship between law and society in the transition from feudalism to capitalism; the rise of human rights and the rule of law in Western democracies, including the rise of the legal exception (slavery, for example).
