CAS-HC249 How to Write a Beautiful Sentence

Have you ever had your breath taken away by a sentence? Have you ever loved a sentence so much you had to write it down or share it with someone else? Have you ever wondered how a writer could create such a beautiful sentence and how you could create one too? In this course, we will read and analyze many sentences by many different writers in many different types of writing (novels, short stories, prose poems, nonfiction, etc.) to expand our understanding of what a sentence is and what it does. Using these sentences as models, we will write our own sentences to discover not only how to write a beautiful sentence but also what it means to call a sentence "beautiful." Can an "ugly" sentence be beautiful? Can a sentence that seems "off" or "wrong" be beautiful? Does a sentence have to be long, flowery, or ornate to be beautiful? Or can short and simple be beautiful? The goal of the course is to expand our understanding of the varieties of sentence structures and the varieties of effects we can create with our own sentences.
