CAS-HC248 Fairy Tale or Reality? The ‘Look’ of Love in Netflix’s Bridgerton

The phenomenon of Netflix’s Bridgerton television series has broadly spurred conversations about romance/love, fashion, and music. Though the series is historically set during the Regency period in England (c 1813-1827), its impact on 21st century popular culture has encouraged serious dialogue on themes such as, feminism, race, sexuality, societal power structures, consumerism, and colonialism. The course will critically discuss these topics in relation to the television series. Students will actively participate through watching, listening, reading assigned primary and secondary materials, class discussions, informal and formal written responses, a midterm assessment, and collaborating in a creative group project for the final exam.
