Overview
Academic English Level 4 is designed for students in the intermediate to high intermediate range of English language proficiency. In level 4, students will practice listening to and taking notes on academic lectures. They will learn to identify abstract ideas and distinguish main points from supporting details in both listening and reading. Students will participate in classroom discussions on academic and other topics and will build speaking and presentation skills, such as confidence, delivery skills, appropriate body language, and developing visual aids. Writing in level 4 will focus on standard academic essays, in a variety of genres, that include a clear introduction with thesis statement; body paragraphs with transitions, clear topic sentences, and sufficient support; and an appropriate conclusion. Courses in level 4 also focus on developing academic success strategies, analyzing and understanding American culture and literature, examining and responding to current issues and events, and continuing to expand students’ intermediate level vocabulary and grammar skills.
