LAW-9024 Approaches to Criminal Case Adjudication, Sentencing, and Justice in US and Irish Law

This one credit course will examine the adjudication of criminal cases with a focus on sentencing and the broader goals of criminal justice systems in the U.S. and Ireland. It will consider how theories of deterrence, rehabilitation, and restorative justice shape sentencing practices and outcomes. The course will also explore non-traditional models that address the societal factors contributing to criminal behavior, including problem solving courts and community-based interventions. Students will compare U.S. and Irish approaches to using criminal justice adjudication as a means to prevent future crime and address criminal behavior.
