SPAN-317 Spanish for the Health Professions
This course is geared toward students with a background in Spanish at the intermediate to advanced level and interested in exploring or pursuing a career in the health-related professions. It aims to foster effective cross-cultural interactions with Spanish-speaking patients by using a framework in the humanities. Students in this course will develop targeted Spanish language skills with an emphasis on medical terminology, medical interpreting, specialized vocabulary, and experience with real medical situations. They will also be given extensive space through the understanding of oral and written narratives - not only as a way to build proficiency in the language through the use of specific vocabulary and grammatical structures, but also to cultivate cultural humility and self-reflection. Through exposure to cultural and medical texts, students will gain an awareness of the Spanish language's importance for all health fields and practitioners in the United States. Students will practice completing medical forms, explaining information presented in medical brochures and journals as well as in campaigns, writing reports, and conducting interviews with patients
