SPAN-316 Spanish for the Legal Professions
This course reinforces student's Spanish skills to allow them to assist people of the Latinx community with the legal system of the United States and to help them navigate the complexities of immigration, family, and criminal law. The class will cover a broad mix of legal contexts, while building the student's practical legal terminology and written and oral communication skills. Through lectures, readings and written assignments, and oral exercises, participants will practice a wide array of legal Spanish skills ranging from legal readings and writing strategies to oral presentations of substantive legal issues that deal with the topics mentioned above. Emphasis will also be placed on cultural topics that may affect successful interaction with Spanish-speaking individuals and families faced with matters concerning the law. Students will have access to career training options available in the legal arena by interacting with professionals who work with the Latinx community in contexts requiring legal knowledge. This course will provide an introduction to the use of Spanish in legal settings in the United States and to careers in the legal fields. The courses will be taught in Spanish. Prerequisites: Spanish 290 or 300 or Instructor's consent.
