POLS-279 Race, Ethnicity, and Politics
Championing causes, donating time or funds, and lobbying for good are viewed as admirable pursuits in U.S. culture and manifested in various forms such as community service, philanthropic efforts and a thriving non-profit sector. This course dives into the politics of doing good, exploring the origin of this service culture. Did government spur non-profits to provide government services or did non-profits themselves start service provision when government did not respond?Students will examine the dynamics relationship between the social and government sectors. By the end of the course students will have a deeper understanding of this relationship, including the current-day legislative barriers/pathways that aid service delivery. Designed for students interested in pursuing careers in government, public policy, non-profit organizations, or who simply wish to gain a deeper understanding of the ethical and political dimensions of public policy.
