LAW-8170 Human Rights Survey
This is an introduction to the theory and practice of human rights law. It examines legal frameworks for protecting human rights at the United Nations, including the main treaties, as well as the regional human rights institutions, and the mechanisms developed to monitor and enforce these rights. The course will also discuss weaknesses and critiques of the international human rights system, including claims that the system is ineffective, serves only some populations, and fails to consider cultural realities on the ground. The course covers a wide range of topics through weekly reading assignments and discussions.
