LAW-2909 Ocean Law

This course explores lawlessness on the high seas and frameworks for ocean governance, with a focus on legal protection of marine biodiversity and the deep sea. We review the international law of the sea, the legal authority of flag states, and the governance of deep sea exploration and exploitation. Sources of law include the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which is the constitution for the worlds oceans, and other international treaties governing the oceans. We also review legal regimes that govern regional fisheries, international seabed mining, and maritime conflicts in the South China Sea. 23 Mar 2023
