HST-340 History of Modern Europe, 1650-1945
This course explores the history of Europe from the Scientific Revolution in the mid seventeenth century up to the establishment of the European Union. It traces major historical developments from a wide range of perspectives, including cultural, religious, scientific, artistic, social, ideological, and political, in order to provide a holistic and comprehensive overview of the formation of modern European society. Students will examine the profound transformations experienced by European nations and their inhabitants during the transition from the early modern period to the modern era. In analyzing Europe’s path to modernity, the course also situates the continent within a global framework, highlighting Europe’s extensive connections with other regions of the world. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to understand the complexities of contemporary European society, politics, and economy. This knowledge is particularly valuable given Europe’s prominent position in international geopolitics today.
