CJ-695 Special Topics
Spring 2023:
CJ-695-AE: Guns, Violence & Communities This course examines the relationship between guns and violence in American communities. To do so, we first must delve into the American culture of guns, as well as statistics on gun ownership and gun violence in the U.S. compared to other countries. Causes and correlates of gun violence are examined, followed by the effects of gun violence, particularly trauma, on communities and their residents. We end by examining legislation related to guns and explore proposals aimed at reducing gun violence in our communities. Throughout the course, we will pay attention to intersectionality connections (particularly class, race, gender, and political affiliation) and current events regarding guns and violence in communities.
CJ-695-BE: Queer Criminology This course is designed to provide students with an overview of the field of queer criminology, a framework within criminology focused on the experiences of LGBTQIA+ people within the Criminal Legal System (as victims, offenders and incarcerated people) and on employing queer methodological approaches and perspectives.
