PSYCH-220 Understanding Suicidal and Non Suicidal Self-Injury

In this class we will examine theoretical and empirical research to try and answer the question why do people purposefully harm themselves? Topics will include suicidal thoughts and behaviors, nonsuicidal self-injury, and related phenomena (e.g., contagion, depression). Epidemiology, prevention, and treatment will be also discussed. In addition, we will look at the ways in which self-injury is portrayed in media (films, novels, podcasts). Students will demonstrate their understanding and critical analysis by completing a set of written assignments, examinations, and in-class presentations.
