POLS-622 Race and the Law

Race and the Law Course Description: Race and the Law examines historical and contemporary intersections of race and the US legal system. Through an exploration of four themes: slavery, sovereignty, immigration and citizenship, and civil rights, students will gain a deeper understanding of how law simultaneously functions as a tool of liberation and oppression. We will read a combination of case law and secondary source material that spans multiple disciplines including history, legal studies, and political science. Law is not just doctrine from the U.S. Supreme Court, but rather, all around us in the way that everyday people interpret, challenge, and shape law.
