SF-1206 Technology, Globalization, and Sustainable Development

This course takes a transdisciplinary approach to show that the sustainable development of economies is a multidimensional goal that requires a lot more than environmental stewardship. In doing so, it examines how development, globalization, and equity relate to sustainable development, and the changes that are needed to promote it. Why are these things important to know? Because the world's most highly regarded economists, academics, scientists, and business leaders know that the current path to economic growth and development is unstainable: Despite astonishing economic growth since the First and Second Industrial Revolutions (more than 250 years ago), about half of the world's population still lives in poverty, inequality is dramatic and increasing even in developed nations, pollution and destruction of natural habitats threaten human existence, increasing resource scarcity is expected to raise tensions between global superpowers, and recent technological innovations are not living up to expectations.
