2023-2024 Catalog

CAS-HC230 One Big Book

While most literature courses present students with a wide variety of shorter texts, One Big Book seeks to study a single long book in illuminating detail over the course of the semester. The primary goal of the course is to strengthen students' close reading skills by attending carefully to a complicated or dense text. The class will divide the long book into manageable weekly readings to facilitate literary investigation, interpretation, and discussion. Students will write weekly reflections that draw their attention to the book's historical and cultural context, its discursive and rhetorical features, and its novel use of literary techniques. The semester will culminate in a final analysis of the book using practiced close reading techniques and critical source material.
