CJ-730 Women, Crime, and the Media

This class explores the images of so-called "bad girls" in the media. Drawing on depictions of justice-involved girls in newspapers and television news, films, television shows and other mass media, we will critically examine the labeling of girls as bad or deviant and society's response to them. We will use an intersectional perspective for this examination, considering how gender as well as race, class, and other social categories interact to shape girls' experiences with "delinquency" and the juvenile justice system. We will also consider girls' resistance and activism movements around juvenile justice reform.
